Like many of you out there, I have carried a traditional folding leather wallet for basically my whole life. Also like many of you out there, more and more of my friends have made the switch to the modern “tactical” style wallet which typically has a much more sleek design and makes far more efficient use of space while avoiding a complete George Costanza situation in your pocket. You know what I’m talking about. The swelled wallet full of cards, cash, receipts, and Lord only knows what else. It frankly sucks.
That’s why I was really happy when the people at MGear reached out and asked if I’d be interested in testing out and reviewing their latest offering, the MGear Gadget Wallet 3.0. I told them that I’d give it a shot for a couple of weeks and then report my findings back to you all of you out there in readerland. As it turns out, I am insanely annoyed that I did not make the switch to this style of EDC (everyday carry) wallet sooner as it is a far more modern and pleasurable experience than what I had gotten accustomed to over the years.
Before we get into the breakdown, a couple of things. The MGear Gear Wallet 3.0 you see here was completely spec’d out by me when I ordered it. You’ll have the exact same experience when you order yours. The retail price on the wallet you will see below would have been $ 76.00. Mine was provided to me for review purposes. In the interest of full disclosure I wanted to make that known. If you want to get to ordering, here’s the link to do it! – MGear Gadget Watch 3.0 website
When the company says that these wallets are fully customizable, they are not kidding. The option list is astonishing. From a miniature flashlight, mini-pen, flat tools, etc, the sky is the limit. The front plate is also fully custom made to your color selections and desires as well as being removable to allow an open panel for the display of your ID if you so desire.
The construction is robust. The frame of the wallet is machined out of aluminum, the front, back, and side panels are carbon fiber, there are quality screws used, the interior spring is stainless steel, and the band on the back is nigh strength nylon for long lasting use .
Oh, and the wallet carries a limited lifetime warranty.
Sooooo… .what did I think? Follow along to find out.
The wallet arrived in the MGear packaging and tightly seated in a foam liner. My first immediate impression is that this was a quality product based on the way it was packaged and the robust nature of its construction.
Once removed from the packaging, we were able to explore some of the neat stuff that comes with the MGear Gadget Wallet 3.0. The magnifier (at bottom) as well as the measuring and survival tactics card are both provided with the wallet. The flat tool was spec’s by me in the ordering process. There are multiple flat tool options with different functions. I chose this one as it suited my wants and needs the best.
A close up of the handy-dandy measuring card.
A neat look at the flat tool I chose for this “build” wallet. Explore the MGear website while ordering your for a multitude more options you can add to these wallets. I was blown away by what they offer and it was fun to personalize this one from end to end. MGear website
Now, onto the actual wallet itself and its function. It will hold five cards inside itself and they are strongly secured by a nice stainless steel tension spring. If you are thinking to yourself that five cards is not enough, it was a concern for me as well, but I’ll get into how this thing changes your whole wallet game shortly. The front plate which I chose the blue carbon fiber backing for can be changed out for any others that you choose to order or can be removed to simply have your ID fully exposed and open to be shown when necessary.
Here you can see the cross section look with the five cards in the wallet, a couple cards under the nylon elastic band, and cash as well. This has been the game changer for me. No more swelled up wallet lugging around a load of junk you do not need and never use. No more jamming that mess in your pocket, etc. This thing is efficient, sleek, and way more comfortable to use.
Wait, did I mention that virtually EVERYTHING about this wallet can be customized?
And this right here tells the story of why I am in love with this MGear Gadget Wallet 3.0
This photo is doubly wild when you realize that the wallet is on the right, which I have ditched is still that chunky with all the rest of that stuff in the MGear wallet! You’d have to take the stuff out of the MGear to get the real picture of the wallet on the right and it was not a load of fun to carry around or manage. Do I carry less stuff? Hell yes. Have I discovered the things I use and the stuff I was just carrying to carry? Hell yes. Has it been a positive change? Hell yes.
So here’s the final word on my experience with the MGear Gadget Wallet 3.0. I truly like this product. I use it now and will continue to use it far, far, far into the foreseeable future. The investment into the product is one I would make willingly knowing what I know now. I’ll have this thing forever, so the up front cost is what it is. Once you make the purchase and have the wallet for however long you use it, the buy really makes a lot of sense.
