With supply chain and staffing shortages causing more stress on holiday shopping, there might be another solution: DIY gifts.
Many area craft stores offer classes or take-home kits to create holiday decor, ornaments or gifts that cannot be found anywhere else.

“Gifts you make yourself is special because it is so much more personal,” said owner Irina Miech of Eclectica Beads in New Berlin. “If you give someone a gift you make with your hands, you put so much into it.”
Here are seven Milwaukee-area arts-and-crafts stores that offer DIY gift making.
The Potter’s Shop
The Potter’s Shop has many pottery classes listed on its website you could use to make DIY gifts.
A holiday favorite is a Christmas elf cookie jar. This one-time class is offered from 5:30 to 8:30 pm Nov. 12. Cost: $ 45, including all materials
A one-time pottery wheel sampler class has participants making a creation and picking out a glaze color. It is offered from 6:30 to 9 pm Nov. 19. It takes about four weeks before completed works are ready to be picked up. Cost: $ 40 for the class and $ 10 to keep an additional piece.

Eclectica Beads has a variety of kits at a variety of prices.
The kits come with links to an online video on Facebook, Miech said. Kits for snowflakes and snowmen are popular.
Another option is to participate in one of the shop’s DIY workshops.
Eclectica Beads offers a workshop from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm Nov. 20 to make a Royal Rivoli bracelet using Swarovski Rivolis and other crystals. Cost: $ 28; materials must be purchased separately.
A workshop to create Royal Chess bracelets is offered from 4 to 7:30 pm Nov. 24. Participants can use rich colors and Thunder Polish bugle beads to create a geometrically inspired pattern. Cost: $ 28; supplies must be purchased before class.
Make an “ice beauty pendant” from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm Nov. 27. According to the Eclectica Beads website, the pendant is a lacey, delicate sculpture of a snowflake. Cost: $ 32; materials must be purchased separately.
Nature’s Elements in Silver is offered from 12:30 to 3:30 pm Nov. 28. Participants will make a mold of items such as twigs, buttons, rocks and other natural elements to create organic pendants, charms and other jewelry. Fired pieces can be picked up three days after class. This is a beginner-friendly class. Cost: $ 55; supplies are included.

MeikoBella Studio offers an ornament-making class and three holiday decor-making events
The theme of the Nov.17 ornament-making class is Klimnt Night. Class is from 5:30 to 7 pm Cost: $ 30, plus $ 10 for an additional ornament.
The holiday decor-making events are from 6 to 8 pm Dec. 2, 9 and 16.
On Dec. 2, participants can paint two marshmallow figures on canvas. On Dec. 9, participants will paint on heavy paper Christmas trees with wine such as merlot, cabernet sauvignon or chardonnay. On Dec. 16, the theme is Mingle and Jingle, where participants will use a holiday theme to decorate a wood piece. Cost: $ 50 per class.

Just Kiln ‘Time
At Just Kiln ‘Time, aspiring artists can complete an art project on the spot, including paint-your-own pottery, glass fusing or mosaic.
The cost varies, from $ 8 of studio time to up to about $ 80 for the supplies.
Classes are listed online. Pottery kits are available take home; projects will be ready about a week after they are returned.

Knot just Beads
Knot Just Beads offers classes, a place to do bead work and a variety of beaded crafted ideas.
From 10 am to 5 pm Nov. 19 and 20, the shop will have a Deer Widow’s Weekend, providing an opportunity to come in and celebrate beading. There will be daily specials and classes.
Wool applique runs from 6 to 10 pm Nov. 19. Participants will create a monogrammed ornament. Cost: $ 45, including supplies
Bead embroidery rings is offered from 10:30 to 1:30 pm Nov. 20. Cost: $ 30, including supplies
Lampwork classes are scheduled one-on-one; contact the store for available times. Participants can learn to melt glass with the Minor Bench Burner torch to create lampwork beads. The limit is two students per session. Cost: $ 80 per person for four hours

Located in Thiensville, glaze, a destination art studio, has a paint-your-own pottery studio and ice cream parlor with to-go kits, in-studio painting, glass fusing and wine glass painting.
There are 400 to 500 pieces, including mugs and popcorn bowls, to choose from. Participants request a color, get a kit to make the item and return the item back to be fired. You can also request custom kits for glass fusing and wine glass painting.
Prices vary; call or stop by to see a variety of kit options.
Painting with Santa will be offered from 9:30 to 10:30 am Nov. 28, where children can create glass-fused ornaments, paint handprint reindeer plates, sculpt snowman treat dishes and arrange cupcakes in a jar. There will also be pictures with Santa and ice cream. Cost: $ 75, plus tax. Preregistration is encouraged online; space is limited.
